The family of former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai has demanded his immediate and unconditional release from the custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, insisting that his continued detention is unlawful.
In a statement signed by his son, Mohammed Bello El-Rufai, the family said the former governor has remained in custody despite the expiration of the remand order used to justify his detention.
According to them, the magistrate court order obtained on February 19 only permitted detention for 14 days, a period they say has now lapsed without renewal or fresh judicial authorisation.
The family argued that as of March 6, there is no valid legal cover for El-Rufai’s continued detention, since the commission has neither filed formal charges before a competent court nor secured another remand order.
They accused the anti-corruption agency of engaging in what they described as unlawful self-help and warned that the development undermines the rule of law.
The statement added that El-Rufai is ready to answer any lawful charges in court, but must not be held indefinitely without due process.
The family said the only lawful path now is clear: release him immediately and unconditionally.
