Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Femi Falana, has thrown his weight behind the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission’s decision to freeze Osun State Government’s accounts, stating that the anti-graft agency acted within the law.
Falana clarified that the EFCC is legally empowered to freeze accounts of both federal and state governments, provided it obtains a court order.
His remarks come amid controversy over the commission’s action, which has been criticised by some political figures as an overreach.
Falana, however, argued that the EFCC’s powers are derived from the EFCC Act and relevant court precedents, making its actions lawful.
He urged the Osun State Government to cooperate with the investigation rather than resort to public complaints.
The freeze is reportedly linked to an ongoing probe into alleged mismanagement of state funds. While some residents have expressed support for the EFCC’s move, others fear it could disrupt government operations and payment of salaries.
Falana’s endorsement is seen as a significant boost for the commission, which has faced accusations of selective justice.
