Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) Femi Falana has called on the Federal Government to act decisively to end the wave of killings and abductions in Benue and Plateau States.
In a statement on Monday, Falana, chair of the Alliance on Surviving COVID-19 and Beyond, praised the swift arrests following the killing of 16 people in Uromi, Edo State, where 14 suspects were detained.
He also commended Edo Governor Monday Okpebholo’s engagement with Kano State authorities and his pledge of compensation to victims’ families.
“While the rapid response in Edo helped avert reprisals, similar urgency is lacking in Benue and Plateau, where innocent lives continue to be lost,” Falana said. He stressed that the Federal Government has a constitutional duty to protect citizens and must ensure that suspects in custody are promptly charged. Falana questioned why law enforcement resources—readily deployed during elections—are not mobilized daily to safeguard communities.
He urged state Attorneys-General to expedite prosecutions and called for enhanced intelligence sharing between citizens and security agencies. “We cannot remain passive while our people are killed or abducted,” he warned, underscoring the need for a unified, people‑driven security strategy.
