Human rights activist and lawyer, Femi Falana SAN, has called upon the Federal Government to compensate the families of those who tragically lost their lives in recent stampedes across the country.
Speaking at the Akeredolu Leadership Lecture Series in Akure, Falana blamed the Nigerian Police for failing to adequately protect citizens during these events.
He argued that while poverty may be a contributing factor, the primary cause of these deaths lies in the failure of security personnel to maintain order and ensure public safety.
Falana commended the late Governor Rotimi Akeredolu for his courage in establishing the Amotekun security network, a move that challenged the Federal Government and paved the way for the recent approval of state police.
He highlighted this approval as the greatest tribute to Akeredolu’s legacy, demonstrating how his vision for improved state-level security has now become a reality for the entire nation.
Falana emphasized the importance of security sector reform in promoting peace, stability, and development.
He pointed to Ondo State as a model for other states, showcasing the positive impact of proactive security measures in maintaining peace and order.
He concluded by commending Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa for continuing the legacies of his predecessor and for upholding the principles of good governance and the rule of law.
