The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has officially ratified an agreement between the Federal Government and organized Labor regarding palliative measures established on October 3, 2023. These measures aim to alleviate the impact of fuel subsidy removal on Nigerian workers and citizens.
Minister of Labor and Employment, Simon Lalong, confirmed this development to the press after a FEC meeting chaired by President Bola Tinubu.
Lalong stated, “We presented a memo on the arrangement of the agreements between the government and Labor, addressing about 15 or 14 items.”
The agreement encompasses several aspects, including legal filings that have already begun, and others necessitating presidential approval, which has now been granted by the FEC.
It was agreed that there should be evidence of implementation within 30 days, a key condition for FEC’s approval.
Furthermore, the Minister of Labor addressed the government’s involvement in resolving the leadership crisis within the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), clarifying that initiatives were underway to facilitate negotiations between the concerned parties.
Lalong explained, “The sixth item was about interference, specifically with issues related to Road Transport Workers and RTEAN. We have initiated meetings between the two organizations and are making progress.”
This endorsement by FEC is a significant step toward implementing measures aimed at mitigating the consequences of fuel subsidy removal in Nigeria.
