The Federal Government has expressed serious concern over vandalism on the newly completed 2nd Niger Bridge. Minister of Works, David Umahi, highlighted the destruction of expansion joints, crucial components designed to accommodate thermal expansion, despite security measures in place.
In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media, Barr. Orji Uchenna Orji, Umahi condemned the sabotage of this critical infrastructure, emphasizing its significant socio-economic benefits.
Umahi underscored the importance of the bridge, completed and handed over in December 2023, as a vital link enhancing trade and tourism between the southern states and the rest of Nigeria.
He lamented the destruction of such an essential asset by individuals who should be its beneficiaries.
The government is implementing stronger security measures to protect the bridge and has called on the public to be vigilant.
The Ministry of Works is also ready to reward anyone providing useful information leading to the apprehension of the vandals.
The government appeals to local communities to take ownership of and safeguard such vital projects.
