In a significant boost to the fight against insurgency, the Federal Government has secured a total of 1,721 terrorism convictions since 2017 through its mass trial programme.
Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, disclosed this at a press briefing in Abuja, highlighting the government’s commitment to strengthening criminal justice administration.
The convictions, he said, cut across Boko Haram, ISWAP, and other terrorist groups, with trials conducted under tight security in specially designated courts.
While civil society groups have welcomed the milestone, they also called for transparency in the judicial process and rehabilitation of convicts.
The development comes amid persistent security challenges in parts of the North-East and North-West, raising questions about the effectiveness of the overall counter-terrorism strategy.
