The Federal Government has pledged to pay N2 trillion out of the N4 trillion owed to power generation companies (GenCos) by the end of 2025 to forestall a potential nationwide blackout.
Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, made the announcement during the 2025 Ministerial Press Briefing in Abuja, explaining that the debt—mostly inherited from the previous administration—would be cleared through cash payments and promissory notes. He said the settlement is crucial to sustaining power generation and stabilising the sector.
Adelabu also defended the recent hike in electricity tariffs, stating it was aimed at improving services and not favouring distribution companies. He stressed that the ongoing subsidy payments are carried over from previous years and 2024, not newly created.
He encouraged citizens to report defaulting electricity distribution companies, adding that offenders would face sanctions.
Highlighting progress, the minister noted Nigeria hit a record generation peak of 6,003MW on March 25, 2025. This was followed by 5,801MW evacuation and 128,370MWh output on March 4. He said average power generation in early 2025 rose to 5,700MW—a 40% increase from 2023.
Minister of Information, Mohammed Idris, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to transforming the media landscape after returning from the NAB Conference in the US, where he sought strategic global partnerships.
