FG To Sue Daily Trust Over Samoa Agreement Report

The Federal Government has announced plans to file a lawsuit against Daily Trust newspaper following its report on Nigeria’s signing of the Samoa agreement.

The controversial agreement, which allegedly includes clauses supporting LGBT rights, has sparked outrage among clerics, activists, and civil society organisations.

Information Minister Mohammed Idris dismissed the report as “baseless and sensational,” stating that any provision inconsistent with Nigerian laws would be invalid. He emphasized the government’s commitment to media freedom but expressed concern over “reckless reporting” that could threaten national security.

Idris revealed that the government will lodge a formal complaint with the Newspaper Proprietors Association of Nigeria (NPAN) Ombudsman and seek redress through legal channels. He reiterated the administration’s friendly policy towards ethical media and free speech while warning against fake news and disinformation.
