The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) has issued an urgent flood warning, advising residents along the Rivers Benue and Niger to evacuate due to rapidly rising water levels.
Continuous heavy rainfall has caused the water levels at key stations, including Lokoja and Makurdi, to surpass critical thresholds.
NIHSA Director General, Umar Mohammed, warned that the Kainji and Jebba dams were closely monitoring water releases to manage downstream flooding risks.
He urged residents in flood-prone areas to cooperate with emergency response agencies and move to safer locations to prevent loss of life as the rains persist.
Mohammed called for caution and immediate action as floodwaters continue to rise, posing a significant threat to communities along the rivers.
