A massive fire destroyed several shops and vehicles on Monday at Sokoto’s Buzaye Garage, a mechanic hub frequented by motorists from neighbouring Niger.
The blaze reportedly started around 10 a.m., believed to have been triggered by an electrical fault, and raged for hours despite combined efforts by the Federal and Sokoto State Fire Services alongside local residents.
Affected mechanics said at least 40 workshops were damaged, including sections for Mercedes-Benz repairs and spare parts sales. Vehicles belonging to both locals and Nigerien customers were also lost.
Buzaye Unit chairman of the Nigerian Automobile Technicians Association, Engr. Abdulkadir Muhammad, described the incident as devastating, highlighting that many owners lost both property and vehicles in their care.
He attributed the fire’s intensity to flammable materials and welding gas cylinders stored in the village.
Muhammad appealed to the Sokoto State Government for support, noting that a similar incident over a decade ago received minimal assistance. Firefighters continued battling the flames as of press time, with total damage yet to be confirmed.
