The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has reported that climate change-driven flooding has resulted in over 603 fatalities and the displacement of 1.3 million people across 31 states in Nigeria from 2022 to the present.
These floods have caused economic losses totaling $6.681 billion between June and November in the areas affected.
NiMet attributes the farmers’ inability to adapt to climate change to untimely access to weather and climate change information.
The agency also emphasized the importance of passing agro-climatic information to citizens in a timely manner to help mitigate the impacts of climate change on food security.
