Prof. Attahiru Jega, former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has called for the restructuring of Nigeria before the 2027 general elections.
Speaking at the convocation lecture at Bauchi State University, Jega emphasized the need to devolve power and resources from the federal government to the states and local governments.
He criticized the defective presidential system and excessive power concentration at the federal level, advocating for reduced governance costs.
Jega opposed the idea of reverting to a parliamentary system, urging a rational, evidence-based process of restructuring to safeguard Nigeria’s future and address economic challenges.
