The family of Nigeria’s former President, Muhammadu Buhari, has announced his passing in London.
According to a statement signed by his former spokesperson, Garba Shehu, Buhari died on Sunday afternoon at a private clinic in the United Kingdom, where he had been receiving medical attention.
“May Allah accept him in Aljannatul Firdaus, Amin,” Shehu added in the brief statement issued on behalf of the family.
President Buhari, who led Nigeria from 2015 to 2023, was widely known for his anti-corruption stance, military background, and influence in national politics spanning over four decades.
He first came to power as a military ruler in 1983 before returning as a democratically elected President three decades later.
Tributes have begun to pour in from political leaders, associates, and citizens across the country and abroad, mourning the loss of a man many described as disciplined, austere, and deeply patriotic.
