The French Embassy has denied allegations of plans to establish a permanent military base or exploit Nigeria’s natural resources.
Speaking at a concert marking the end of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, Ambassador Marc Fonbaustier reaffirmed France’s respect for Nigeria’s sovereignty.
“There is no plan for a military base in Nigeria. France seeks cooperation in security, not permanent presence,” Fonbaustier stated.
He clarified that a recent memorandum of understanding between the two nations aims to provide technical support for developing Nigeria’s solid mineral sector, dismissing claims of exploitation as a misinterpretation.
With 100 French companies operating in Nigeria and thousands of jobs created, France continues to strengthen economic ties. Fonbaustier highlighted ongoing collaborations in training, agriculture, and culture, emphasizing mutual respect.
“France listens to Nigeria’s needs and does not impose solutions,” he concluded.
