Archbishop Simeon Borokini of the Akure Diocese has raised the alarm over worsening economic conditions in Nigeria, warning that even churches are now bearing the brunt.
Addressing the 15th Synod of the Anglican Diocese in Akure, he said declining member contributions reflect the growing poverty across the country. “If people don’t have money, churches suffer too.
The church gets no subvention from government,” he said. He urged President Tinubu to prioritise job creation, youth engagement, and industrial development to tackle rising poverty.
While commending improvements in security under Tinubu, Borokini called for more action against kidnappings and herdsmen attacks threatening farmers.
He also praised FCT Minister Nyesom Wike for infrastructural upgrades in Abuja and acknowledged reforms in the forex market, which he said have helped stabilise the naira.
However, he warned that idle youths remain a ticking time bomb. Rating Tinubu’s performance at 60%, he advised the government to ramp up efforts in job creation, economic recovery, and national security to alleviate growing public frustration and despair.
