In the past year, 1,616 medical professionals trained in Nigeria have migrated to the United Kingdom (UK), according to a study by the General Medical Council (GMC), the official registry of UK physicians.
Nigeria is the third-largest non-UK graduate contributor of doctors to the UK workforce, behind India and Pakistan.
The report reveals that 63% of the 23,838 new doctors added to the UK register in 2022 had training from outside the UK.
The study highlights a significant increase in the number of doctors entering the UK market with Nigerian Primary Medical Qualifications, from 181 in 2014 to 1,616 in 2022.
