The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has reported a staggering 220% increase in cholera cases in 2024, with 10,837 suspected cases and 359 deaths nationwide.
The surge has resulted in a Case Fatality Rate (CFR) of 3.3%, surpassing the 3.1% recorded in 2023. Lagos and Adamawa states are among the worst affected, with Lagos accounting for 43% of the total cases.
The NCDC attributes the rise to poor sanitation, lack of access to clean water, and displacement from conflicts and disasters.
Adamawa remains a hotspot with 535 new cases in the last month. The NCDC has activated a national Cholera Technical Working Group and is urging the public to report suspected cases while promoting proper hygiene practices.
The agency also cited challenges like open defecation and inadequate WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) facilities, particularly in rural areas.
With the epidemic still escalating, public health officials are calling for swift interventions to prevent further loss of life.
