In response to a growing mpox (monkeypox) outbreak, the Federal Government of Nigeria has enhanced monitoring and screening at all entry points into Nigeria.
Prof. Muhammad Pate, Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, announced these measures following the Africa Centre for Disease Control’s declaration of a public health emergency.
The outbreak, primarily affecting the Democratic Republic of Congo, has seen significant spread across Africa, including a new viral strain detected outside DRC.
Nigeria has recorded 39 confirmed cases of mpox in 2024, with no deaths. The government has introduced an online health declaration form for travelers and activated infectious disease centres nationwide to strengthen its response to the outbreak.
