Lagos State Health Commissioner, Professor Akin Abayomi, has called on the federal government to improve working conditions for doctors to address the increasing “Japa” syndrome, where medical professionals leave Nigeria for better opportunities abroad.
Speaking at the Nigerian Society for Haematology and Blood Transfusion’s 48th Annual Scientific Conference in Ibadan, Abayomi stressed that a more conducive work environment is essential to retain talent and attract Nigerian doctors working overseas.
He highlighted the challenges faced by medical practitioners in Nigeria, including inadequate training opportunities and poor working conditions. With only 3.9 doctors per 10,000 people, and one pathologist for every 500,000-1 million people, Abayomi urged both the government and medical professionals to collaborate in creating better opportunities for specialist training and career development.
