AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) Nigeria has raised an alarm over the global recording of more than one million sexually transmitted infections (STIs) every day—a trend it attributes to a decline in condom use.
Speaking in Makurdi on the occasion of the 2025 International Condom Day (ICD), Advocacy and Marketing Manager Steve Aborisade expressed deep concern that dwindling condom utilization could undermine global efforts to curb HIV/AIDS.
“Despite the staggering number of daily STI cases reported by the World Health Organization, condom use is falling in many regions,” Aborisade noted.
To address the issue, AHF Nigeria plans to mark ICD with a series of activities including free HIV testing and the distribution of AHF-branded condoms.
The flagship event is set to take place in Lokoja, Kogi State, on February 13, 2025, while free testing and condom giveaways will also be conducted in Abuja-FCT, Anambra, Akwa Ibom, Benue, Cross River, and Nasarawa states.
Aborisade stressed that promoting condom use is vital to preventing new HIV cases, urging Nigerians to embrace safer sexual practices for their protection and public health.
