The National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has declared an indefinite nationwide strike starting Friday, October 31, 2025, at 11:59 p.m., after a marathon emergency meeting of its National Executive Council.
NARD President, Dr. Mohammed Usman Suleiman, said the decision followed the federal government’s failure to meet its 30-day ultimatum on welfare and salary demands.
He accused “certain elements in government” of exploiting doctors and vowed full compliance with the strike order.
The association’s demands include payment of promotion arrears, correction of professional allowances, reinstatement of dismissed doctors, and review of the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS).
Resident doctors make up the bulk of Nigeria’s medical workforce in public hospitals. Their repeated strikes have paralysed healthcare services nationwide, with patients often left stranded.
NARD urged its members to hand over patients ahead of the strike and engage community leaders for support, warning the government that only immediate action can avert a prolonged shutdown of critical health services.
