The Niger State government has uncovered multiple illegal mining sites across Minna, raising alarm after discovering women and minors actively involved in the dangerous activity.
The raid, led by Commissioner for Mineral Resources, Alhaji Garba Yahaya, targeted areas including Tungan Goro, Chanchaga, and Angwan Kwakwa.
The team, accompanied by security operatives, observed that some children skipped school to dig for minerals, while women risked their lives alongside them.
Several illegal miners fled upon spotting the officials, abandoning tools that were later confiscated to prevent further operations.
In Chanchaga, unchecked excavation had damaged nearby buildings, prompting some residents to relocate.
Locals told reporters the miners typically operate at night to avoid arrest. “We’ve seized their tools before, but the police often release them,” a resident said.
Commissioner Yahaya condemned the practice, warning that offenders will be prosecuted.
He said the state governor had directed a full crackdown on illegal mining activities.
He also urged communities to support the government’s efforts by reporting illegal operations, adding that legitimate miners would be assisted in securing legal permits and operating within the law.
