Sheikh Sani Yahaya Jingir, National Chairman of Jama’atu Izalatil Bid’ah Wa’ikamatis Sunnah (JIBWIS), has rejected the appointment of Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan as INEC Chairman.
Speaking at JIBWIS’ 33rd annual seminar in Jos, Jingir described the appointment as “a risk of the highest order” for Nigerian Muslims.
The cleric referenced a past legal brief by Amupitan, which allegedly justified attacks on Christians, and questioned how someone with such a record could lead the nation’s electoral body.
He also criticised the silence of the National Assembly on the matter, calling for the appointment of a neutral and fair chairman.
Jingir’s comments underscore religious sensitivities surrounding leadership in key institutions, urging policymakers to prioritise trust and impartiality in critical national appointments.
