Former President Goodluck Jonathan has held talks with Sierra Leone’s President Julius Maada Bio in Freetown as part of his ongoing role as ECOWAS mediator for the West African nation.
The meeting focused on consolidating peace, strengthening democratic institutions, and fostering regional cooperation in the face of growing political tensions in parts of the subregion.
Jonathan, who has been shuttling between West African capitals since his appointment, reiterated ECOWAS’s commitment to ensuring that elections across member states remain free, fair, and peaceful.
This latest round of consultations comes ahead of Sierra Leone’s upcoming general elections, where the opposition has raised concerns about electoral integrity.
The former Nigerian leader also held closed-door sessions with civil society groups and political party chiefs.
His mission, according to sources, is to build consensus and reduce the risk of post-election violence in a country still recovering from past conflicts.
