Residents of Kogi State have raised strong concerns over the frequent auto crashes along Felele Highway in Lokoja, calling on federal and state authorities to urgently repair the road.
The appeals came after a tragic accident involving an articulated vehicle and a shuttle bus carrying students from Federal University Lokoja (FUL) resulted in seven fatalities and multiple injuries. Speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria, local residents and community leaders condemned the continual road mishaps, attributing them to a damaged section of the highway.
Chief Emmanuel Dauda-Shelika, the traditional ruler of Lokoja, decried the incident as “one accident too many” and urged immediate government intervention, including the construction of service lanes and flyovers, stricter traffic regulations, and enhanced road safety education.
Local stakeholders, including transportation experts and civil society groups, stressed that prompt action is critical to prevent further loss of life and to restore confidence in the safety of the nation’s highways.
