Bishop Matthew Kukah of the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto has criticized Nigeria’s leadership cycle, describing it as one marked by “accidental leaders” lacking preparation for governance.
Speaking at the commissioning of a school building in Abuja, Kukah traced the history of Nigerian leaders, highlighting their unexpected rise to power, from Olusegun Obasanjo to Bola Tinubu.
He argued that while democracy thrives on principles like “one man, one vote,” the nation’s democratic process has repeatedly failed to produce competent leadership.
Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa, NDLEA Chairman, also called for early leadership training, citing failures in accountability as a root cause of Nigeria’s challenges.
He revealed a disturbing trend involving visually impaired individuals in drug trafficking, showcasing unique challenges in combating organized crime.
Kukah and Marwa emphasized that governance requires knowledge and preparation to meet evolving challenges.
The event, held in honor of the late Amaka Ndoma-Egba, highlighted the importance of leadership development for a better Nigeria.
