The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have suspended their nationwide strike for one week. The decision came after a joint extraordinary National Executive Council meeting on Tuesday, June 4, 2024.
The strike, which had shut down banks, schools, and government offices, prompted the Federal Government to invite labour leaders for discussions.
The meeting, held at the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation on Monday night, resulted in an agreement on a new minimum wage exceeding N60,000.
The government and labour unions agreed to continue negotiations daily for the next week to finalize the new wage.
The statement from the meeting emphasized the President’s commitment to a fair minimum wage and assured that no worker would be penalized for participating in the strike.
