Organized Labour in Ebonyi State, led by the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC), protested the recent hike in electricity tariffs on Monday 13, 2024. The protest was held at the Abakaliki offices of the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) and the National Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).
The workers, led by NLC Chairman Ogugua Egwu and TUC Chairman Chidi Igboji, chanted slogans and carried placards with various inscriptions, including “NLC says no to electricity tariff increase” and “Nigerian government, let the poor breathe.”
NLC Chairman Ogugua Egwu described the tariff increase as “reckless, insensitive, and wicked,” and demanded its reversal. “We will continue to picket all EEDC and NERC offices until the hike is reversed,” he said.
TUC Chairman Chidi Igboji noted that the increase would further impoverish the poor masses, saying, “This increase is evil because it ensures the poor masses will continue to be poor. We are saying no to this increase and demanding that EEDC and NERC let the poor breathe.”
The protest was part of a nationwide action by Labour unions against the electricity tariff hike.
