Nationwide Power Outage as Nigeria Grapples with First Electricity System Collapse in 2024

Despite assurances and promises, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) faced its first electricity system collapse in 2024, causing a halt in electricity distribution across the country.

Abuja Electricity Distribution Plc (AEDC) notified customers of the system collapse at 11:21 hours on February 4, 2024, resulting in a nationwide power outage.

This incident follows challenges in gas supply to electricity generation companies and comes on the heels of recent electricity supply issues in the country.

The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, had urged Nigerians to be patient, citing challenges, including outstanding subsidy debts and gas supply constraints to National Independent Power Plants.

Adelabu suggested a move to a full cost-reflective tariff regime if the government cannot settle subsidy debts, emphasizing the need to address issues affecting power generation and distribution in the nation.
