Nextier Advisory Ltd’s Nigeria Violent Conflicts Database has revealed a grim tally: between 2020 and 2024, Nigeria suffered 5,291 violent incidents resulting in approximately 20,472 deaths and injuries.
The report, titled “Mutations of Terror and Conflict 2025, Security and Conflict Outlook in Nigeria,” attributes these losses to a range of factors including terrorism, banditry, violent protests, cultism, kidnapping, communal clashes, extrajudicial killings, piracy, crude oil theft, and illegal mining.
Notably, the report highlights that in 2024 alone, Nigeria recorded 43 terrorism incidents with 278 casualties and 1,306 banditry incidents with 253 casualties.
Farmer-herder conflicts, particularly acute in the North Central and North West, contributed significantly to the casualty figures, with over 2,347 lives lost during the four-year period.
The report also noted that ransom payments totaling N2.3 trillion were made by affected Nigerians. Looking ahead to 2025, Nextier warns of emerging threats—from the rise of new militant groups to escalating conflicts in key regions—and calls for urgent measures to restore stability and protect lives.
