The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) announced its plan to monitor the nationwide protest set for August 1 to ensure that participants’ rights are upheld.
Dr. Tony Ojukwu, NHRC Executive Secretary, emphasized that while the 1999 Constitution guarantees the right to protest, organizers should avoid actions that could threaten public safety or damage property.
The NHRC criticized security agencies for demanding permits, noting that the Court of Appeal supports the right to protest without such requirements.
The Commission stressed the importance of peaceful demonstrations and the need for both protesters and law enforcement to respect public order while safeguarding constitutional freedoms and protecting infrastructure.
