General Abdourahmane Tchiani, the leader of Niger Republic’s coup, has opted for dialogue with the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) after discussions with Nigerian Islamic Scholars led by Sheikh Abdullahi Bala Lau of Jama’atu Izalatil Bid’ah Wa Iqamatus Sunnah (JIBWIS) in Niger Republic.
Prime Minister Ali Mahamane Lamine Zeine stated that General Tchiani approved talks with ECOWAS and remains hopeful for discussions in the coming days.
‘’Our country’s leader has given the green light for dialogue. They will inform the Nigerian President of our agreement…. We anticipate that ECOWAS will meet us in the coming days to discuss lifting the imposed sanctions,’’ Zeine commented.
A Voice of Nigeria (VON) report highlights how Nigeria’s Intervention Team, which includes prominent Islamic scholars, engaged with coup leaders in Niger. All parties jointly emphasized dialogue to address Niger’s political issues.
Islamic Ulammas, led by Sheik Bala Lau, met with General Abdourahmane Tchiani in Niger’s capital, Niamey, discussing various topics including ECOWAS’ demand to reinstate former President Bazoum.
Sheik Lau, National Chairman of Jamatul Izalatu Bida Waikamatu Sunnah, revealed that the scholars represented President Bola Tinubu, who accepted their intervention. They conveyed their stance to President Tinubu, underlining the importance of resolving Niger’s political impasse through dialogue.
The visit aimed to encourage General Tchiani and other coup leaders to prioritize peaceful resolution over conflict. General Tchiani warmly welcomed their involvement, affirming their commitment to diplomatic solutions for peace.
General Tchiani expressed disappointment that ECOWAS leaders issued ultimatums without considering their perspective. He defended the coup as a preemptive measure to avert threats affecting Niger Republic and Nigeria.
He apologized for not giving proper attention to the team sent by President Tinubu, led by former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar (rtd), due to their frustration over the ECOWAS ultimatum.
