Nigeria has partnered with Italy to explore the use of space technology in tackling climate change, particularly the recurring problem of severe flooding.
During a meeting between Nigeria’s Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology, Chief Geoffrey Nnaji, and Italian Ambassador Dr. Stefano De Leo, both nations agreed to leverage space data to improve environmental management and boost agricultural productivity.
Chief Nnaji highlighted how satellite technology could aid in predicting and mitigating flood risks, which have been exacerbated by the overflow of Cameroon’s Loco-Dam.
The partnership comes as Nigeria faces increasing climate-related challenges, including droughts, flooding, and conflicts between herders and farmers.
The Italian Ambassador reiterated his country’s commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s capabilities in space research and technology.
Both leaders emphasized the transformative potential of space development in fostering sustainable solutions to environmental crises, positioning Nigeria as a leader in Africa’s technological advancement.
