Nigeria has made history by fully settling its ECOWAS community levy obligations for the first time in 19 years.
The $85.54 billion payment covers dues for 2023 and up to July 2024, as confirmed during the 66th ECOWAS Summit held in Abuja.
ECOWAS Commission President, Dr. Omar Touray, commended Nigeria for its renewed commitment to regional cooperation under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
He noted that the payment underscores Nigeria’s leadership in fostering integration across West Africa.
The levy, paid on December 13, 2024, reflects confidence in ECOWAS’ vision under Touray’s leadership since 2022. This significant milestone bolsters the bloc’s capacity to address regional challenges and implement key programs effectively.
Dr. Touray lauded Nigeria’s dedication, highlighting its importance in strengthening ties among member states.
