Fresh airstrikes by Nigerian and United States forces have killed over 20 Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) fighters in northeastern Nigeria, the Defence Headquarters confirmed Monday.
The operation, which targeted terrorist enclaves in Borno State, followed the elimination of top ISIS commander Abu-Bilal al-Minuki last Friday.
United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) said the strikes were part of an intensified campaign to cripple terrorist networks in the region.
A US lawmaker also warned terrorists not to test President Donald Trump’s resolve, highlighting the joint operation’s success.
The military said the airstrikes destroyed several hideouts and logistics bases, dealing a major blow to the insurgents.
However, concerns remain about civilian casualties and the effectiveness of such operations in ending the decade-long insurgency.
The collaboration underscores the deepening security partnership between Washington and Abuja, even as local communities continue to bear the brunt of the violence.
