The Nigerian Hydrological Services Agency (NiHSA) has issued a flood alert for Bayelsa, Kogi, Anambra, and Delta States, warning of possible river overflows along the Niger and Benue corridors.
Director-General Arc. Umar Mohammed announced the alert during a press briefing in Abuja, citing satellite data and digital models indicating rising water levels.
He said NiHSA had enhanced its early warning systems with real-time hydrological monitoring stations across the country.
“Our data shows high water levels that could trigger localised flooding,” he warned, urging residents in flood-prone areas to remain vigilant and follow official advisories.
Mohammed disclosed that recent floods have contaminated shallow wells and water sources in affected communities. He called for stronger collaboration between agencies and local governments to ensure access to safe drinking water.
He added that NiHSA’s forecasts are internationally rated for accuracy and that several African nations are now adopting its model.
Despite improvements, he said continued rainfall in southern Nigeria means flood risks remain active through the season.
