The Arewa Broadcast Media Practitioners’ Forum has criticized the Nigerian government over the recent arrests of minors involved in the #EndBadGovernance protest, describing the detentions as a breach of rights.
Forum Chairman Alhaji Abdullahi Yelwa called the action “an affront to the dignity of the youth.”
The group argued that addressing the economic hardships that drove young citizens to protest should be the priority, not punitive measures against them.
Noting Nigeria’s escalating poverty levels, they urged the government to tackle underlying economic issues and avoid heavy-handed responses to public dissent.
Additionally, the forum demanded the release of the detained minors and adequate healthcare provisions for those reportedly collapsed in court. They emphasized the need for systemic reforms to prevent similar incidents, underscoring that meaningful economic relief could reduce public dissatisfaction.
