Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate, has blamed Nigeria’s frequent power grid collapses on poor leadership and policy implementation.
His comments come after the national grid collapsed twice in 24 hours, plunging parts of the country into darkness.
Obi described the recurring collapses as a national embarrassment, noting that Nigeria’s energy infrastructure fails to meet the country’s needs.
He compared Nigeria’s power generation capacity to other African countries like South Africa and Egypt, both of which generate over 40,000 megawatts, while Nigeria struggles to produce less than 10,000 megawatts.
Obi called for urgent reforms, stressing that reliable power is critical for economic growth and the survival of small and medium-sized enterprises, which drive Nigeria’s GDP.
