Former Edo Governor and Senator Adams Oshiomhole has criticized Nigeria’s wage system, warning that inadequate pay harms national security and economic stability.
Speaking at the National Institute for Security Studies (NISS) in Abuja, Oshiomhole highlighted that despite a recent wage increase, Nigerian workers face economic hardship, undermining morale and productivity. He argued that fair wages are crucial for security and sustainable economic growth.
Oshiomhole pointed to systemic exploitation, with workers vulnerable to layoffs and union support often unreliable.
He noted that collective bargaining and the right to strike are vital tools for fair wages, yet many workers still experience poor working conditions. Rising inflation also undercuts the real value of wages, leaving workers worse off than in previous years.
NISS Commandant Joseph Odama endorsed Oshiomhole’s view, stating that an equitable wage system benefits national security and supports development, emphasizing that a motivated workforce is essential for Nigeria’s long-term progress.
