A fire broke out at a smuggled petrol warehouse in Seme Krake, a town in Benin near the Nigerian border, resulting in the loss of at least 33 lives, according to local authorities. The fire, which started near a pineapple market, quickly spread to nearby houses and parked vehicles.
Three injured individuals were evacuated for medical treatment.
Despite the removal of fuel subsidies by the Nigerian government, the illegal trade in smuggled petrol from Nigeria continues to thrive, posing significant risks due to the precarious storage conditions, leading to frequent fires with heavy casualties.
