The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has demanded the immediate resignation of the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Joash Amupitan, warning that it will escalate nationwide civil disobedience if he remains in office.
In a strongly worded statement titled “Why Amupitan Must Resign Now,” the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, said revelations linking the INEC chairman to a pro-Bola Ahmed Tinubu social media post in 2023 raise serious questions about his neutrality as Nigeria prepares for the 2027 elections.
According to the opposition party, the credibility of any electoral body depends not only on independence but also on public perception of impartiality. It described the allegations as a troubling sign that could undermine trust in Nigeria’s democratic process.
The ADC also expressed concern over alleged attempts to tamper with digital records connected to the controversy, warning that such actions amount to an attack on transparency and accountability.
The party likened the situation to “a referee wearing the jersey of one of the teams he is meant to officiate,” insisting that Amupitan’s continued stay in office would deepen suspicion about the electoral process.
It said petitions would be sent to relevant institutions, including foreign governments and the Nigerian Bar Association, while protest actions would continue until the INEC chairman steps down.
