The All Progressives Congress (APC) is set to formally unveil Vice President Kashim Shettima as President Bola Tinubu’s running mate for the 2027 presidential election, ending months of speculation over his political future.
Senior party leaders confirmed that the APC National Working Committee and other key stakeholders met in Abuja to finalise the decision and prepare for an official announcement.
The development comes after widespread reports suggesting that Tinubu might replace Shettima with a northern Christian candidate in a bid to reshape political calculations ahead of the next election cycle.
By retaining Shettima, the APC appears determined to preserve the Muslim-Muslim ticket that delivered victory in 2023 despite strong opposition from several quarters.
Political observers view the move as an attempt to project stability within the ruling party amid growing economic frustrations and rising opposition realignments.
However, critics argue that the APC’s focus on 2027 campaigns comes at a time when many Nigerians are more concerned about inflation, insecurity and declining living standards.
While the decision may strengthen internal party unity, analysts say the real challenge for the Tinubu administration remains convincing voters that its policies are improving lives rather than merely preparing the ground for another election battle.
