Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has described the low voter turnout in the FCT Area Council elections as a threat to Nigeria’s democracy, accusing the administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu of shrinking democratic space.
In a statement issued by his media aide, Atiku said turnout below 20 per cent — with AMAC recording about 7.8 per cent — reflected declining public confidence in the electoral system.
He alleged that intolerance and intimidation of opposition voices have discouraged participation.
Calling for unity among opposition parties and civil society, Atiku warned that continued erosion of participatory governance could inflict lasting damage on Nigeria’s democratic institutions.
