Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has raised alarm over what he described as a calculated plan to weaken opposition parties ahead of the 2027 elections.
In a statement Sunday, Atiku condemned a recent court ruling that nullified the registration of the National Democratic Coalition (NDC), saying it signals a dangerous drift toward authoritarianism. He urged the judiciary to resist being used to cripple political alternatives.
Atiku specifically accused the ruling APC of backing legal maneuvers to eliminate rivals, warning that such tactics could destabilise the country. “Democracy dies when the opposition is silenced,” he said.
The NDC, a younger party, had been gaining traction among disillusioned voters. Atiku’s comments reflect growing tension in the political space as President Tinubu’s administration faces mounting criticism over economic hardship and insecurity.
Many Nigerians worry that the narrowing of political space could leave them with no viable choice in 2027.
