Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has formally joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC), cementing his shift toward a new political coalition ahead of the 2027 elections.
He announced the move on Monday via his X handle, sharing a photo of himself holding his ADC membership card accompanied by the message: “It’s official.”
Atiku’s defection comes months after he resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in July, citing deep internal rifts and a departure from the party’s founding ideals.
His exit followed the unveiling of the ADC as the preferred platform of several opposition figures preparing for the next presidential contest.
In his resignation letter to the PDP Jada 1 Ward chairman in Adamawa State, Atiku wrote that the party had strayed from its core principles and no longer aligned with his political convictions.
He expressed appreciation for the support he received during his time in the PDP but stressed that irreconcilable differences left him with no choice but to move on.
With this switch, Atiku positions himself within a new coalition bloc as the opposition landscape begins to take shape for 2027.
