Former Kaduna Governor Nasir el-Rufai has urged political leaders to forge a historic alliance between the North and South-South to “rescue” Nigeria ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking during a condolence visit to the family of late elder statesman Edwin Clark—a noted Niger Delta advocate—el-Rufai stressed that unity across regional and political divides is essential to address Nigeria’s current crises. “In the 60s, 70s, and 80s, the North traditionally partnered with the South-South. We must revive that alliance,” he declared.
El-Rufai warned that without a broad coalition, Nigeria risks descending further into chaos, describing the country’s plight as requiring a full-scale rescue operation.
Accompanied by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, el-Rufai also praised past economic reforms led by Atiku during the Obasanjo era.
Amid speculation that he might shift his political allegiance, his remarks underscore his commitment to national unity.
As he meets with members of opposition parties, el-Rufai’s call is part of broader strategic discussions to build a united front for the 2027 elections, emphasizing that collaborative efforts across regions are vital for Nigeria’s recovery.
