Following a landmark Supreme Court verdict, former local government area (LGA) chairmen in Rivers State have vowed to return to office on Monday, March 3, 2025.
The decision stems from a ruling that upheld the tenure extension granted by the Rivers State House of Assembly under Rt. Hon. Martins Amaewhule’s leadership. Dr. Samuel Nwanosike, former chairman of Ikwerre LGA, confirmed in a viral video that the Supreme Court decision validates their extended tenure, despite previous disputes over the legality of the House’s action.
The ruling has reignited a political crisis in the state, with 21 out of 23 ex-LGA chairmen now determined to reclaim their positions.
Although efforts to reach additional former chairmen have been unsuccessful, the resolution follows an earlier extension of tenure in April 2024, based on provisions of the Rivers State Local Government Law 2024.
Critics argue that the move undermines the democratic process by delaying fresh elections, yet supporters claim it provides stability until a new electoral cycle can be organized.
The development has heightened tensions as stakeholders await further instructions from the state government and the judiciary.
