Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State was dramatically escorted out of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) office by Deputy Inspector General of Police Frank Mba in the early hours of Sunday.
The incident occurred during the collation of results for the Edo governorship election.
Obaseki had entered the INEC premises at around 2 a.m. to protest alleged irregularities in the collation process for his local government, Oredo.
INEC officials, however, reminded the governor that he was not authorized to be present, leading to tensions between security forces and party members.
At around 4 a.m., a contingent of police officers, led by DIG Frank Mba, escorted Obaseki out of the venue, with the officers repeatedly shouting, “Leave!”
The removal of Obaseki came after All Progressives Congress (APC) leaders and protesters, led by Hon. Dennis Idahosa, demanded that the governor be expelled from the premises.
Idahosa criticized Obaseki’s presence, stating that it was an abuse of office and that the governor had no business at the collation center.
