Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde says he now regrets supporting President Bola Tinubu during the 2023 presidential election, admitting the alliance has not produced the governance outcomes he anticipated.
Makinde, a key member of the former G-5 governors who revolted against PDP candidate Atiku Abubakar, said he backed Tinubu believing he would unite competent Nigerians to steer the country out of crisis. “I’m human.
I supported him because I thought he would do what’s right for the country. Unfortunately, that’s not what we’re seeing,” he told journalists in Ibadan.
He vowed not to support the President in 2027, citing concerns about Nigeria’s democratic direction and the future of the PDP.
Makinde also revealed details of his fallout with FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, saying Wike told the President he would “hold the PDP” for him in 2027 — a promise Makinde described as unilateral and unacceptable. “Wike can support whoever he chooses, but he cannot mortgage a whole party without consultation,” the governor said.
He insisted that PDP members have the responsibility to defend political pluralism rather than allow the ruling party dominate opposition structures.
